Formed by a huge volcanic eruption nearly 2000 years ago, Taupo is New Zealand's largest lake and a fantastic place to visit and explore. The lake, framed by the magnificent mountains of the Tongaririo National Park to the south, offers trout fishing, boating and other aquatic adventures. Around Taupo township you can enjoy numerous 'hot pools' (thermal swimming baths) and other volcanic and scenic attractions, including the Huka Falls, probably the fiercest rapids in New Zealand. Taupo is an excellent base for skiing at Mt Ruapehu, an hour south, or to enjoy the various treks in the park, including the world famous Tongariro crossing, featuring, magnificent multi coloured volcanic lakes.
