Rotorua - a geothermal wonderland of steaming lakes,
boiling mud, roaring geysers and beautiful scenery should not be missed by any
visitor to New Zealand. It is also renowned for its Maori art and culture
and is an excellent place to experience Maori food, music and hospitality.
Traditional and modern Maori carvings of wood, bone and pounamu (jade) can be
bought from local galleries and shops. The area features over 10 beautiful
lakes surrounded by native and exotic forests cut with clear fast flowing rivers
offering visitors many outdoor activities including hiking, mountain biking, 4WD
tours, rafting, boating and of course, some of the best trout fishing in the
world. Rotorua township has a number of excellent tourist facilities
including 'hot pools' (thermal baths), The Agrodome (farm show), Rainbow Springs
trout farm, a gondola and luge as well as several thermal valleys.
