Milford Sound

Milford Sound, ice carved from granite thousands of years ago then flooded with sea water, is a wonder of scenic and wildlife beauty.  The drive into the sound (actually, a fiord) offers splendid views of pristine beech forest, towering snow capped mountains and tumbling rivers and water falls.  Once at Milford, a flight or a boat trip will take you out past the mighty Bowen Falls pouring icy mountain water into the sea  from atop a vertical rock cliff.  Further out, near the entrance to the Sound, the incredible Mitre Peak rises straight up out of the ocean and climbs an incredible 1000 metres into the snow belt.  Fur seals, sea birds, and bottle nose dolphins are another highlight.  The world famous Milford Track is only one of many hiking trails available in the area, to suit all fitness levels and budgets, and the scenic flights, kayak trips and other options are highly recommended.
