The West Coast means wilderness to New Zealanders.
This narrow strip of land between the Southern Alps and the Tasman sea offers
unequalled scenery and adventures to the visitor. From Karamea in the
north, to Jackson Bay in the south, there is an amazing variety of forest,
mountain, sea, river and lake to satisfy any hunger for natural beauty and
outdoor excitement. In each area you can choose from a huge variety of tours and
activities to suit all budgets. Westport, in the north features Cape
Foulwind seal colony, the mighty cliffs of the Buller Gorge and the sea side
beauty of the Heaphy track area. Greymouth in the middle (see separate
section) is famous for the Punakaiki rocks, Lake Brunner - home of the rare and
graceful Kotuku (heron bird) and the Paparoa forest. To the south, the
Glaciers of Fox and Franz Josef (see separate section) cut their way from high
in the mountains almost to the sea. Right at the end of the Coast, the
Haast area (separate section) is one of the last true wilderness areas in the
world, with giant snowy mountains, deep green forests and white foaming rivers
crashing down to beautiful empty surf
beaches.
