The Marlborough Sounds invoke images of lost bays, deep
forest, and long still sea channels. It is a collection of finger like
flooded sea valleys that provide an excellent marine playground for boating,
fishing, diving, hiking and secluded beach exploring. Picton, the main
town is a charming traditional village of old wooden houses, shops, restaurants
and pubs offering visitors a huge variety of tours, activities and
sightseeing. It is also the port for the ferry to Wellington and the
beginning of the spectacular TranzCoastal train to Christchurch. Visitors
spending a few days can enjoy numerous trips to the outer sounds and islands
where native forest and wildlife are plentiful, the fish and shell fish
delicious and the scenery superb.
