New Zealand tourism's official mark of quality Tourism Industry Award Winner

Greymouth

Situated in the middle of the West Coast, Greymouth is a premier tourist destination, famous for its pubs and hospitality

Greymouth is the central West Coast town and offers the visitor excellent accommodation, information and refreshments.  It is a central location for exploring the area which is famous for its spectacular scenery and adventure activities including 'black water' rafting (through caves) white water rafting, jet boating, caving, hiking, fishing and many more. Greenstone, or 'pounamu' (a type of jade) is a popular local product and the Coasters (the locals) are known for their hospitality. To the north of Greymouth the exciting coastal road squeezes between mountains and ocean through to Westport.  On the way are the curious Punakaiki or 'pancake' rocks, unusual limestone cliffs that feature a blow hole and a number of other 'holes' into the ocean far below.  Behind that is the beautiful Paparoa National Park also with unusual limestone formations and lush native forest and abundant birdlife. Inland from Greymouth is the mysterious Lake Brunner, home of the rare and elegant Kotuku, or Blue Heron bird.  There are a number of tours, guided or otherwise that allow you access to this beautiful spot.  South from Greymouth is the road to the glaciers, which passes through several historic goldmining towns which offer further possibilities for entertainment and adventure.
