Dunedin is the ancient Scottish name for Edinburgh,
which is appropriate as the city was foundered by presbyterian Scottish
migrants in the 19th century. The architecture of Dunedin reflects this
tradition with the University, Town Hall, Railway Station a number of private
residences and many churches being built in the grand 19th century style.
The old worldly Larnach Castle on the peninsula is neo gothic in design and
definitely worth a visit. Dunedin mixes traditional Kiwi rural culture with
a vibrant university life and has all the facilities and attractions of a large
modern city with museums, art galleries, theatres, cinemas and excellent
restaurants, cafes and bars. The Otago peninsula is a scenic highlight
with its beautiful wind swept beaches and wildlife tours including fur seals,
albatross colony, penguin colony and other bird life. No where else in the
world are these largest sea birds, the albatross, so easy to view. To the north
of the city the peaceful Palmerston estuary is in easy reach and south, the
Taieri Gorge train is an exciting day trip.
