Coromandel

The Coromandel Peninsula is an aquatic and forest playground easily reached in half a day from Auckland...

Less than 2 hours drive and also accessible by ferry from Auckland, the Coromandel Peninsula is a popular place for holidaying. Featuring large natural forests and idyllic white sand beaches, there are endless activities and sight seeing possibilities to occupy visitors.  The native bush features kauri and other giant trees and some historic kauri log dams, especially in the Kauaeranga Valley hiking area.  There are a number of hiking options to suit all levels and also some points of interest such as a Water Garden and a mountain tramway.  The west coast of the peninsula is popular with fishers and boaties and the east has some absolutely magical beaches, including several accessible only through natural tunnels.  They can be visited by car, boat or sea kayak.  Surfing and diving are options in this area also, and no one should leave Coromandel until they have enjoyed a thermal bath in the sand at Hot Water Beach.
